1775 Burning of Portland in a Contemporary American Magazine

TITLE: The Pennsylvania Magazine: or American Monthly Museum. For November, 1775. Printed by R. Aitken. Philadelphia. [491]-538 pp.

CONDITION: Original string ties; never bound. Lacks wrappers and engraved plate. Light top moderate foxing and staining throughout.

DESCRIPTION: This is the November, 1775 issue of The Pennsylvania Magazine -- the only magazine being printed in America at this time. Included in this issue are several very detailed, contemporary reports of the British burning of Falmouth (now Portland), Maine by Captain Mowatt in October, 1775. There is also an extract of a letter from General Burgoyne to Lord Stanley describing the Battle of Bunker Hill that occurred in June. Other reports concern the articles of capitulation of Montreal and the rejection by King George of the Olive Branch Petition. Wonderful, contemporary reports in America's only magazine of the time.
